When we think of acne we tend to think of teenagers, although more than ever before, adults are suffering with oily and acneic skin conditions. 54% of women aged 25 and over have some facial acne, mainly due to hormonal fluctuations that trigger excess sebum production.
In reference to hormonal fluctuations, we are not simply talking about the monthly changes women have to deal with, but also and foremost, the daily ones caused by stress. When our body is under chronic stress it throws our adrenal glands into overdrive, which in turn boosts sebum production, which then sets the stage for acne development.
While stress is the trigger, there are four main factors that contribute to acne development; too much oil production, dead skin cell accumulation, bacteria and inflammation.
Treating adult acne is not the same as treating teenage acne, as adults often have sensitized skin or a combination of skin conditions in addition to their acne, which makes treatment more challenging, although not impossible. If the underlying causes can be pinpointed, this can make treatment much more effective, when combined with a couple of lifestyle changes.
